Identify the spot before treating it
Tell the provider when the spot appeared and whether it has changed. Sun spots, post-inflammatory marks, melasma, moles and other lesions are not interchangeable. A suspicious, changing or undiagnosed spot may need evaluation by a dermatologist before cosmetic laser treatment.
Skin tone and pigment-change risk
Laser response and the risk of lighter or darker marks can vary with skin tone, recent sun exposure, the pigment depth and device settings. Discuss prior pigment changes, tanning and current skin products. A test spot or another treatment approach may be recommended.
Preparation and aftercare
Follow individualized instructions for sun exposure, active skin-care products and wound care. Temporary redness, swelling, crusting or color change can occur. Seek advice if you develop unexpected blistering, worsening pain or signs of infection.
